Editing, Till Death Do Us Part.
The Struggle Is Real
Today my Instagram reel was about the editing process and my current struggles with it.
No one told me editing was going to be harder than actually writing the book!
But no matter, quitting isn’t an option so I will continue to edit if it’s the last thing I do.
Stuck In The Loop
Trouble is, it feels like I’ve been editing this same chapter for a year already, (it’s been about a week), and it’s still not quite right.
My mind tells me it’s time to move on to the next chapter, but in my heart, I know the words don’t yet tell the story I want them to tell.
Until they do, I can’t move on.
I guess I could, but my mind would shift back to the chapters I didn’t finish editing and I wouldn’t be able to concentrate anyway.
Getting It Right
Is this what it’s like to be obsessed? I don’t think so, I just want to get it right!
I think spending so much time editing (at least it’s what I tell myself) just shows how passionately I care about what I’m writing, and about what I hope some day you will read.
If it takes me a little longer than some, I guess that’s okay, because at the end of the day if you’re not happy with your work, what else matters?
Round Three, And Counting
I am on my third round of edits, and I’m told there will be more to come.
That’s okay, I look forward to them because I know each round brings me one step closer to having a finished book that I hope to be proud of.
A story that spilled over from my heart to each page, and the joy I imagine feeling at having it completed propels me forward each day.
Am I Even Creative?
It’s funny, I’ve never considered myself a creative person, and I still don’t, but people say writing is a creative venture.
My mom was the creative one in our family and I’m sure that gene skipped me.
She knew how to decorate beautifully for each season, and she was so crafty. She could make something amazing out of pieces of matting and flowers and netting and whatever else you use in crafts, with nothing but her imagination and her glue gun.
And I have a basket sitting in my living room that’s filled with blankets she crocheted for me over the years. She was just GOOD at creating!
This Is My Version Of Creating
All that to say, I guess there are different ways to be creative, and writing and editing this book is my crack at it. It’s fun, it’s maddening, it’s overwhelming and I love it. And I’ll get it finished if it’s the last thing I do.
Stick around for further updates, and hopefully by the time I write my next post, I will at least be beyond this current chapter!
