The Freedom I Found When I Stopped Following Everyone’s Writing Advice.
I’ve Recently Realized Something, And It’s Brought Me Immense Freedom
There are so many different ways to write a book. And just as many people ready to tell you that their method is the one you must follow. That it’s tried, true, proven, and if you don’t adopt it, you’re out of the game before you even begin.
That kind of noise? It can create chaos in your mind and beg you to throw in the towel.
Here’s What I’ve Learned
Instead of listening to everyone, choose just one or two writers you trust, people who offer solid advice and explain their process in a way that makes sense to you. Then close the door to all the other noise and follow only them.
For example, if outlining every chapter and scene gives you heart palpitations, then that’s probably not the best process for you.
And that’s okay.
I am a debut author, making my way through the rounds of edits. I’m still learning a lot as I go, and I want to share the highs, the lows, and the honest truths I uncover along the way.
This one is too important to keep to myself.
Because let’s be honest: the flood of “you have to do it this way” advice online is overwhelming. And if you try to follow all of it, you’ll quickly feel discouraged and overwhelmed. It’s hard to enjoy writing when you don’t even know which way to go.
That was almost me. But it doesn’t have to be you.
Find a mentor, or two, whose methods make sense to you. Who teach in a way you can actually grasp and apply. They’re out there. I promise.
That’s not to say you can’t learn from people who do things differently than you. Of course you can. It just means you don’t have to become them in order to write your book.
I joined an online writing program and community that has been incredibly instructive and supportive. It’s helped me get to where I am today. Sometimes I still have to pinch myself to be sure this isn’t all a dream!
Maybe the online space doesn’t work for you. Maybe you need face-to-face support. Start by looking for local writing groups in your area. I have no doubt they will welcome you with open arms.
The main thing is this:
Don’t let the overwhelm keep you from writing.
If you love to write… if there’s a story burning in your heart… don’t let the “how” stop you from moving forward.
That story is in you for a reason.
And it deserves to be told.
Find the space where you belong.
Learn the craft. Write the book.
And don’t let anything stand in your way.
You’ve got this.
